Puuhamaa- Adventure and Active Fun for Kids

Pauliina Ståhlberg

Our test group of 6 children, ranging from 1 to 10 years old all loved Puuhamaa. Here comes the description of the place.

Puuhamaa is more than the usual kind of amusement park, it´s an adventure park. Instead of electrical rides it focuses on getting the kids moving and playing using their own energy. There are over 60 different facilities to play on from a Tarzan route to all sorts of bouncy castles. Puuhamaa, in Tervakoski is an hour´s drive from Helsinki on the highway toward Hämeenlinna and Tampere. It is only open during the summer, and the entrance fee includes all the rides in the park.

There is a fairly big waterpark area with slides for all ages. The new Rafting one, for bigger kids-and adults too- gives a thrilling slide! There is also a tiny beach on the lake for sandcastle building. But as the Finnish summer isn´t always that warm, and the water is quite chilly too, sauna comes in handy for warming up in between slide. Our one-year-old could have played in the sand all day, feeding the ducks that wander near. The bigger kids were lost in their excitement over trying to get through all the waterpark's slides in the couple of hours I offered them before we headed back. As the waterpark area is small, it´s also quite safe as it´s fairly easy to locate your kids even if they do run amock.

As you can easily spend the whole day in the park, there are a couple of restaurants and cafes that serve the usual child-friendly menu of French fries and sausages and meatballs. There are also plenty of places if you want to picnic and free places for grilling the makkara -sausage- the Finnish way.

Our 10-year old girls also loved the Formula-race cars though none of the children we brought along were tall enough to get to steer the fastest cars yet. Hopefully next year… The neighbors' boys (aged 8) favorites were the different kinds of boats from rowboats to electrical tugs that they steered along the big pond in the park. Our one-year old was still a bit small for the action but she loved chugging around the park areas in the mini train. I was surprised when our daredevil three year old wanted to go onto the thrilling Victoria Falls slide again and again and again with her big sister.

All the kids also loved the trampolines, all of them jumping till their legs gave in and they could only laugh.

The mascot, Puuhanalle- Busy teddy bear would be a rough translation- a yellow bear in blue trousers, tours the park five times a day so it´s impossible not to bump into him and give him a hug to end the day in beauty!
